My best friend, jimmy, who had been having bad luck the past couple of years developing good relationships, finally met the "girl of his dreams." There was only one problem: This girl is married.
I am also friends with the girl and his husband, jerry, and one day jerry told me that he had heard her wife is having an affair. Because I know his wife, I and the couple have many mutual friends; jerry asked me if I had heard the rumor and, if so, if I had any information. Jerry was shocked and distraught about the news, but was hoping to work with his wife to save their marriage.
What should I say?
The people involved in this dilemma are not only me, jimmy and the couple, but the couple's family, as well. If I keeps jimmy's confidence, certainly that would benefit jimmy, and, possibly, his lover. On the other hand, if I tell jerry what I know, not only jerry but his children could begin the healing process. And, maybe it's not too late to save the marriage. On the other hand, I risk losing her best friend if I tell. All in all, however, it seems more people would be helped if I talk.
Which would be the higher right in my mind–always to tell or never to tell?
I chose not to talk, but unfortunately the couple ended up devoiced…
I have been always thinking if there are better solutions there…
