racism

What is racism? In my dictionary, racism means race discrimination; certain groups of people don’t like others because of different colors, different cultures, different performances etc. I also look up the term ‘racism’ on the web, it turns out that there are various forms of racism such as open racism, violent racism, and covert racism, Open racism expresses freedom of racial thought and speech. Violent racism promotes racism through violence, fear, and persuasionary tactics, Covert racism expresses ideas of racism in disguised forms; sometimes the covert racist is not even aware of the fact that he is racist. These basic forms of racism, although different in form, all have the same main purpose, to promote racism…

One might also ask: why people are racist? To be honest, I don’t know for sure. I gave some thoughts on this issue and I am certain that it is a question of fighting for the share of something that can be natural resources, money, proud, justification.., you name it!

I do not know about any racist around, but there should be many. I remember one time my Professor Cooper mentioned in class that when he was in Japan, he saw an ultra-nationalist making a speech on the street which I think belongs to the group of extremists. Every time I heard anything about Japanese acting like they are superior, I really got confused very very much: what could being Japanese be superior? What could any race be superior than others? All equal! You can be proud of being a race as you are, that is understandable. But there is neither superiority nor inferiority! Just because extremists think and act they are superior, it does not mean they are. Maybe they are afraid that people think they are not superior, so they consistently attack the rest of the world before being attacked by stating they are better than the other races, letting the rest have no energy to attack them first. Good idea!

In my point of view, the origin of racism is inequity and hatred. From my more than 3 years of experiences in Canada, I really did not go through anything that makes me feel like I was discriminated! I think Canada has been doing a very good job at maintaining the whole society in balance. Everything is organized and systemized. Not many citizens hate the government or authority. But in Chinese current society, it is getting to totally totally the opposite now. Serious corruptions are still around and huge amount of gangsters are coming too. To make things worse, some government officials cooperate with gangsters to suppress civilians, when the corrupt officials do not know what to do, use violence! Can you imagine what kind of situation that is? Are you realized what I am try to tell you? Discrimination! Discrimination can even exist in the same race!

China is in fast development now, like the professor Cooper said; every growth has to pay a price. But not a price that is too high! I feel safer in Canada than I do in china, is it supposed to be ironic? A Chinese feel safer in a foreign country instead of in china. Maybe the reader would think that I am somewhat exaggerating, no problem! If you lived in china for a period of time and happed to experience something extremely unfair, you would understand what I am talking about then!

Certainly I do not agree with any racist, like a famous man said: “all men are created equal!” No matter who you are, no matter what nationality, no matter how rich or how poor you were, you are or you will be, there neither superiority nor inferiority. But it does not seem to be a principle all of us live by! The question is how to fix it? Unfortunately, the answer will be much longer and more complex the question! The solution I think of is that to make the whole society possibly equal and most of us happy, so no body wants to risk, everybody has hopes for leading a better life via working hard,. suppose there is a society where if you work hard, you can live a better life, you dream could come true. Who would go to extremes!  The stability really counts! Making a society more stable could not remove all the racism, but it can sure make everything much better! In my understanding, there is no racism at all, there is only hatred.
